CervicalCheck has established a network of quality assured colposcopy clinics in the event of a woman requiring further investigation following her smear test. A woman can be referred to one of 15 colposcopy clinics located nationwide as part of The National Cervical Screening Programme.
The vast majority of women screened as part of The National Cervical Screening Programme will only require smear tests. A small minority (two to five per cent) of all women screened will require further investigation or treatment through a colposcopy service.
All CervicalCheck-generated colposcopy referrals should be sent to one of the 15 colposcopy referral clinics identified below.

Waiting times at CervicalCheck colposcopy services
The purpose of cervical screening is to detect and remove pre-cancerous abnormalities in the cells of the cervix. Colposcopy services are an integral part of a cervical screening programme.
Additional resources were put in place by the National Cancer Screening Service to ensure increased capacity and improvements in the quality of the colposcopy services offered to women. Since the start of the CervicalCheck programme in September 2008, greater capacity in colposcopy services has meant an increase in the numbers of high grade disease detected.
The target waiting times for a CervicalCheck colposcopy appointment are:
- Two weeks for an urgent referral.
- Four weeks for high grade (HG) cell changes.
- Eight weeks for low grade (LG) cell changes.
The current (end April 2013) waiting times for a colposcopy appointment at the 15 CervicalCheck colposcopy clinics are shown in the table below.

Only women aged 25 to 60 are eligible for free smear tests under the CervicalCheck programme, with the following two exceptions:
- Women of any age who are attending colposcopy and who are being followed up in accordance with a discharge protocol from the colposcopy clinic
- Women over 60 years of age who have never had a smear test or are not known to the CervicalCheck programme

HPV testing in the follow-up of women post colposcopy treatment
This new test is being offered to women who have had a treatement at colposcopy following a CervicalCheck smear test and an abnormal smear test result. It can help reduce the need for annual smear tests for 10 years after a treatment at colposcopy. More information is available here:
