Contract Holder/Clinically Responsible Doctor Registration in a Primary care setting
The contracted GP, medical director or clinical director of a contracted clinic will have clinical responsibility for all registered health professionals taking cervical screening samples in their clinic. This is outlined in their contract.
They will also have clinical responsibility for all cervical screening tests those health professionals carry out in that practice or clinic.

Please remember you and all sample takers working under your contract are contractually obliged to complete a CervicalCheck Clinical update every 3 years. There is a suite of clinical updates available on www.nssresources.ie from which you can choose from. Your registration will not be complete until you have completed this clinical update requirement.

The following Health professionals can register as a Clinically Responsible Doctor:

CervicalCheck contract with registered medical professionals - provides detailed information for medical practitioners and clinics on the terms and conditions of the contract and should be reviewed prior to signing contract acceptance form.
The contracted Doctor of a registered practice / clinic will have clinical governance for all registered health professionals as per the contract for the provision of cervical screening.
It is the duty of the Clinically Responsible Doctor to ensure that all sample takers in their service are registered with the CervicalCheck programme, appropriately educated and competent prior to commencement of sample taking.
They will also have clinical governance for all cervical screening tests taken by all registered health professionals in the practice.
All Clinically Responsible Doctor’s:
You must inform CervicalCheck in writing if you no longer wish to retain a contract with CervicalCheck at least 6 weeks before your retirement/ resignation date. admin@cervicalcheck.ie
Please note you must not take screening tests 6 weeks prior to your retirement / resignation date – this is to allow screening samples to be processed and follow up care organised if required.
All sample taking must be suspended in the practice until a new contract holder is registered and the practice has been advised of same by CervicalCheck.

Medical Practitioners who are employed by the HSE as Doctors in Charge may register with CervicalCheck and are deemed Clinically Responsible Doctors. They assume clinical governance of all samples taken in the practice and have responsibility for ensuring sample takers under their governance are registered with the CervicalCheck Programme.
The same applies to locums hired directly by the practice, i.e not HSE employees.
