Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the female genitalia

  • Understand the process of metaplasia and importance of sampling the transformation zone (Tz)
  • Understand referral pathways for cases of abnormal bleeding and suspicion of cervical cancer

Addressing common errors in cervical screening sample taking practice. (Clinical Update)

Aim: The aim of the session is to enhance the participants knowledge to avoid common errors in cervical screening sample taking practice.

Learning outcomes: 

  • correctly identify the cervix and vault, distinguish between cervical and vault samples, and select the appropriate sample type based on hysterectomy history
  • assess cervical screening eligibility accurately, including underage and overage screening, in accordance with national guidance
  • identify common human errors in sample taking, documentation and form completion
  • complete cervical screening request forms accurately, understanding what information should and should not be recorded
  • prevent sample and vial-related errors, including expired vials, patient–form mismatches and labelling inaccuracies
  • apply best practice in patient identification, sample labelling and use of lubricants to ensure sample integrity
  • manage difficult or limited-visibility samples confidently while maintaining accurate documentation
  • recognise screening outcomes that require referral to colposcopy and understand the role of the failsafe process in ensuring timely and appropriate follow-up
